The Clift's Pampered Pet Program can be attributed to an Irish Setter guest named Red who in the 1950s frequented the hotel with his owner. Reputedly, Red would come down to the lobby by himself each morning, step out of the elevator, pick up a newspaper and take himself back upstairs in the elevator, never getting off on the wrong floor. Today hound guests are indulged with soft pillows for napping, chef-prepared gourmet dinners, chewy rawhide toys and even a "turn-down" dog biscuit. The 80-year old hotel is a San Francisco landmark. From its opening amid the futuristic fanfare of the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exhibition to its present stated elegance, The Clift is a jewel.
