Zombies on Broadway
Self Titled
Liquid Blue Records, Inc
Zombies on Broadway give it to you just like you want it. you know the way that one girlfriend gave it to you.. just right. This is straight up, great blues tunes played to a tee. The Zombies don't do anything except believe that the blues played with soul is still about as good as it gets.
Out of New York City the Zombies on Broadway or Z.O.B. are Carl Vreeland and Justin Jordan on guitar, vocals and composing duties, Paul Page on bass and Steve Holly on Drums. Both guitarists play rhythm and lead so there is great interplay between them. The rhythm section knows just when to charge and when to hold back.
This is the Zombies debut release on Liquid Blue Records; there are a many great songs here and they grow on you. Two of my favorites are 99 Days by Justin Jordan and Barbershop Mass by Carl Vreeland.
99 Days (.au)/(.wav) (#3/00:25) is a slow blues that uses the number 99 repetitively to build a sense of frustration that reflects the frustration of the singer.
Barbershop Mass has a great slide intro (.au)/(.wav) (#7/00:00) and then breaks into a slinky shuffle (.au)/(.wav) (#7/00:50) about hanging out at the barbershop and singing with the boys. There is great imagery in the tune and you can practically smell the Lavender and the Lime.
There are also two covers on this disc; Taxman, done as a slow funk-rock tune and Janis Joplins, Kosmic Blues done traditionally and well.
This is a great new blues band that also can write, so check it out damn it.
