There is an explosion of new spots to try for more up to date fare. One of the better of the recent new arrivals is a gourmet fast food place started in San Francisco called World Wrapps. Four twenty- something guys vacationing in Cancun brainstormed and came up with a mouthwatering new twist on the traditional burrito. Spinach and sun dried tomato tortillas are the wrappings of choice for this trend setting group. Jasmine rice, Thai chicken, Peking duck, ginger slaw, are just a few of the cross-cultural but mostly Asian influenced fillings they serve. They have many low fat fillings like a curried veggie wrapp with garlic yogurt sauce. Or you can design your own, with so many options available anyone would find something to dig into.
The small storefront setting is ablaze with color, loud rock music and a general feeling that screams young and hip. Vibrant reds, blues and yellows on the walls and on the high stools and small tables doesn't make for a cozy evening. But what the heck, even as I chomp into a grilled salmon and garlic mashed potato wrapp, I really had to remind myself that this is a fast food place. Located in the Marina district of Chestnut Street, World Wraps fits right in with this very singles neighborhood, although I have spied a few well outfitted baby strollers.
Aaron Noveshen, the executive chef guards his World Wrapps recipes like they were gold at Fort Knox. But he did develop a recipe for Urban Desires not served at the restaurant, a sensuous wrap filled with black bean humus, which I previewed to rave reviews at a recent brunch.
There is a cracker bread I now use for my own wrapps, it's called Hye Roller Cracker Bread. The company that makes it assures me that it can be bought worldwide. They have graciously supplied me with some of their recipes, they are fast, easy and won't leave your picnicking family beached with growling tummies. Next time we head for the sun and sand, I'll be packing a scrumptious Turkey and Avocado and a Mixed Fruit Compote Wrapp.
