Putting her modern dance moves aside long enough to take acting lessons at
Stella Adler Conservatory, Wright landed her first role in the 1992 Sundance
Festival winner, Zebrahead, portraying an inner-city Detroit teen torn
apart by her interracial relationship. "That was a very scary time. Here I
was fresh out of acting school and I landed a starring role as my first job!"
Remaining calm, thanks to her strict Muslim upbringing, the following year
Wright earned more acting stripes with her role as a junkie in Boaz Yakin's
critically acclaimed film, Fresh. She then landed guest starring
television roles on "I'll Fly Away " and "Homicide." And recently, she
returned from filming an episode for the upcoming television series, "American
Gothic," in which she plays a demonically possessed housewife. "That was a lot
of fun," laughs Wright. "I guess when they want someone who plays
controversial or difficult roles, they call me." But with her eyes firmly set
on the big screen, Wright recently turned down an offer for a regular role on
FOX_TV's "New York Undercover." As she explains it, "I've got a real shot to
be a leading lady in Hollywood. Just because I'm Black, I'm not going to be
victimized by this business -- or men." Then flashing her brilliant smile, the
young ingenue quips, "Next I want to do a comedy -- that's not what
people expect after seeing you playing a psycho, right?"
