An Interview with Denys Arcand
Interview by Carl Capatorto (Page 3)
DA: Fools, tyrants, egomaniacs. You could go on and on. So I figured it out, you know? If I'm going to become a director, I'm sure I'm going to be a lot more successful than an actor. I saw good actors around. They were very good, excellent, and they could even be better except that usually their work was ruined by this stupid director. So I thought if I become a director, that's going to be easier. I can be better than this guy. Even drunk.
DA: Not to try to be better than your crew, for instance. Suppose you're a young director and [someone on your crew] has done 20 movies and you're saying, "Well, put your mike over there and just place it like that and I know what I'm doing" and so on. You see tons of directors doing that instead of coming to this guy and saying, "Listen, I don't know what to do. I'm new. How would you do it?" And he will tell you. You listen to everybody and then you make up your mind. But, I mean, you've seen people shoot themselves in the foot a hundred times.
DA:	Your ego will be flattened later on. If the film
is good, tons of people are going to massage your ego later on, so just
relax your ego for right now.
DA: (after a long pause) Next time you're going to a restaurant and the waiter comes near you and says, "What are you going to have tonight?" this waiter may be my character. So, you know, look at him in a different light. He's a human being and he might have just lived through what you just saw on the screen.
