Everyone is looking for a little innocence these days. But the line between innocence and sexuality is becoming increasingly blurred. Consequently, those first few moments of passion in one's youth are to be relived at any cost.
Exotica explores this world of innocence bought and sold. The characters obsess on their own particular passions and lost opportunities. Unable to move on in life, nobody in the film really connects with anyone else. They see each other as idealized versions of whom they want but can not have. Naturally, their great- est power comes from what they withhold from each other. The unattainable is the most desirable.
This is an intelligently thought-out project. And, with the exception of a couple of major plot moments that are glossed over, it is told convincingly and compassionately. Still, I wasn't completely thrilled with the experience of this film. The major cathartic moment comes too suddenly and too many loose ends remain. However, there is definitely an audience for this film. You know who you are. Enjoy!
