CAMRYN MANHIEM

On the Road from Wellville to Success

DL: I've known you for a long time, maybe longer than anyone in New York, and I think you know less about men than you used to.

CM: I don't claim that I know anything about them. They are peculiar creatures.

DL: What are the qualities you look for in a man? Sensitive? Strong?

CM: Yeaaaaaah, sure. I love to walk on the beach and sit in front of fires and sip piña coladas with those stupid umbrellas sticking out of them. Who doesn't? I used to read personal ads. "Do you like to take long walks on the beach?" Yeah. "Do you like to sit in front of fires?" Yeah. "Do you like to travel?" MmmHmmm. "And are you thin?" Fuck you.

I would have to say that a fierce, sarcastic, caustic sense of humor is probably the most important thing to me. That if a man can play with the big boys and have a rapier wit, then I will fall in love with him. He doesn't even have to be a totally decent human being.

DL: Sounds a lot like me.

CM: It is. Very similar to you David. You know ten years ago I had a serious crush on you, but you were married at the time.

DL: Well I took care of that, didn't I? Seriously, don't you think it is important that men are nice?

CM: Of course. That's why you and I aren't dating.

DL: Oh. So, sarcastic wit he has to have...Any physical requirements?

CM: I prefer that they're taller than me, because small men tend to like me. I'm sure it's my personality. It's that dominant thing. I'm a little bossy, and I expect to have things done my way. But that doesn't mean I going to turn into a dominatrix in the bedroom.

DL: You're not going to do that?

CM: I believe in an equal partnership.

DL: Don't you think the broad exposure you're getting lately is going to open you up to the whole nation of men? Maybe the problem is you're in too small a market.

CM: Possibly, and I'm open for it. Truly. I'm 33, and by 35 or 36 I would like to be in "a serious relationship." I'd like to have babies.

DL: Are you totally ruling me out?

CM: I have to say I haven't given it serious thought...until this moment.

DL: You know I want to have kids too. And I'm 35.

CM: Well I'm expecting the person I have kids with to live with me, at least for a few years.

DL: Okay!

CM: You'd like to live here, wouldn't you?

DL: I'd love to live here.

CM: Look Dave, I know some of your old girlfriends. I can't imagine what got into them.
