Geffin Records sent me a great disc this week; Nirvana Unplugged. This C.D. really exemplifies what a great talent Kurt Cobain was. It also shows Nirvana as a band that can translate their sound to a different style with grace and ease. With the feedback and pounding stripped away, you're left with great songwriting. Listen to About A Girl; reminds me of early Beatles. Cobains voice also transcends. He sings with a painful angst filled baritone that cuts right to the heart of whatever he sings about.
These songs really work acoustically. They are very coverable. I think people will be recording more Kurt Cobain songs in the future. Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic sound great as usual. They have no problem making the transition to quietness. Obviously many people saw this concert on MTV but this is worth buying and listening to even without TV.
Interestingly enough the press kit that accompanied the disc was a chronology of the band and a photo of Nirvana. Or rather, a photo that said Nirvana, but only pictured Kurt Cobain. Hey, aren't there three members of Nirvana? Why aren't they in the photo? Geffen would never exploit Kurt, so I cant figure out why Dave and Krist aren't pictured. I guess they just forgot to include them. Strange oversight. Hit Come As You Are and Where Did You Sleep Last Night by Huddie Ledbetter.
